Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) ravaged Mindanao, slamming it with devastating rains and unleashing flash floods and landslides that left behind a horrifying trail of destruction. As of 12PM, the death toll has reached 653 (Cagayan De Oro 346, Iligan City 206, Bukidnon 47, Negros Oriental 36, Lanao del Norte 9, Compostela Valley 5, Zamboanga del Norte 3, Surigao del Sur 1). Most of the dead were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters pounded their homes from rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes following 12 straight hours of heavy rains in Mindanao.

Drowning has been identified as the main cause of death. Sendong affected 21 municipalities, 78 barangays and 13,924 families (63,779 persons), with 245 injured and 807 reported missing. 3,422 houses were totally or partially damaged and there are still 38,332 persons housed in evacuation centers to date.

There are currently 19,865 persons in 11 evacuation centers in Iligan City. Cagayan De Oro, which has been placed under a state of calamity, experienced 180 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours, which has led to massive floods in 23 of its 80 barangays, leaving 17,145 residents in 10 evacuation centers. Prior to the onslaught of Sendong in Zamboanga del Norte, about 143 persons had already evacuated their houses which were destructed by flash floods that swept the municipality of Polanco as well as Dipolog and Dapitan cities. Dapitan River had overflown early Saturday morning which flooded several barangays in Dapitan. There are currently 970 persons in 5 evacuation centers in Zamboanga del Norte.

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) maintains strict 24-hour monitoring of all situations in Mindanao, while 626 PRC staff and volunteers deployed in the field are conducting detailed assessments as well as search and rescue operations. PRC has provided hot meals to 2,333 persons and food items to 828 persons in evacuation centers. Welfare desks and first aid stations have been situated in the evacuation centers for affected families. Non-food items such as sleeping mats, mosquito nets, blankets and water are also being distributed to Sendong victims.

what is awesomenuity? :D

aha! Good question!
"What is awesomenuity?"

hmmm..

Well, I just thought up of the word, and thought I would score a bajillion points in scrabble. Or tried to out-do apple's auto-correct and see if it will get through, but I was not victorious.

I tried to define what awesomenuity is. So, I guess it's a cross-breed between awesome+ingenuity.

Awesome would mean: something impressive or would inspire awe.

Ingenuity would mean: inventive skill or imagination. or cleverness.

So awesomenuity might mean any product of clever imagination that would be just simply impressive, or out-of-this-world sort of thing.

So there, I just gave a fake word a fake definition. Thanks!

Hithit-buga

Patay ang makina ng jeep. Isang maulang umaga.
Trapik. Mainit.

Oh Pilipinas kong mahal, P#@*&% walang gasolina!

One ice cream at a time.

"I don't want to eat."
He's just really not into it. I mean, the dinner isn't that bad. The mashed potatoes with gravy are just staring at him, waiting patiently for him to taste some. But, they're not that appealing for him.

"Maybe you can have some, I mean, you know you need to have something. You haven't had any this breakfast. You need to get some strength back."
Persevere. Try. Persuade. All the powers I need to summon. Is it for me, so that I can satisfy myself that I did my part? Or is it really, where it could've been on the first place, for him because he's just getting weak as time goes.

"Look, I don't want to have any. Thank you."

"Okay, maybe we'll leave your dinner there at your table, and then I could check on your medications so that you can have them."
Agreeing to disagree? No. Just trying out some tactics, trying to put a positive on top of a negative. Trying to outwit, outplay, outstrategize, in order for me to help him, (and probably myself as well).

"Look, it won't do any good. I have Cancer."

"....." I just didn't know what to pull out of my head with that. It was like a strong uppercut to my jaw that rattled me for a split-second.

It was as swift as a knife. Quick, yet gentle. Sudden, yet I felt it right through inside. I knew what he had. I knew that he knew of it not too long ago. But the report has gotten to him that it's not getting any better. And it may only be a short time for him.

"...I'm 90..I'm okay."

I felt I've lost my strength, words were not to be found for a while. It was the longest 1 or 2 seconds of the day. I came nearer to him, tapped his hand, and said softly: "I'm sorry."

He half-smiled. It was more of a tired smile perhaps. I might be bugging him and he may choose to rest for more, but he also knew I wasn't quitting too easily.

"Okay" I started with a renewed energy enough to go for the last time "So, would you fancy any ice cream instead? We've got vanilla, which is really nice. I could two for you!"

And finally, a sigh of relief from him, "Yes, I would like that please."

And so I dashed back to the kitchen, and returned with a Vanilla ice cream on both hands. Coupled with some hope, and sprinkled with prayers.

He happily received the ice cream, and I was glad he liked Vanilla as promised. And I will see him again.

One ice cream at a time.
